Oceano Depot Tour

A group of Friends members toured the Oceano Depot on Saturday February 29, 2020. Norm Hammond, long time Oceano resident, historian, and author, was our guide and gave us an interesting and informative walk though the Southern Pacific Type 22 depot and a lot of insight to the local history. The Southern Pacific Railroad and consequently the Oceano Depot were responsible for the development of the community of Oceano. We were able to check out Santa Maria Valley Railroad caboose no. 170 on display and visit the last remaining Dunite cabin which is also on the property. Dunites were people who lived in a small colony about 2 miles south of the Depot in the sand dunes! If you haven't been to the Oceano Depot it's worth the visit. They're open Sundays from 1-3 pm.
