September 22-24, 2023 -- Huntington Library and Gardens Excursion
Our recent trip to the Huntington Library was an unforgettable experience. Our trip started aboard the southbound Amtrak Surfliner on a picture perfect morning. Arriving at Union Station in Los Angeles at lunch time we took a short walk up to “Phillipes Original” famous for their French Dip sandwiches. Our early afternoon check-in at the luxurious Huntington Langham Hotel allowed time for exploring the beautiful grounds and facilities before evening dining. Saturday morning our group had a private tour of the Huntington Library grounds that gave us an interesting and informative overview of Henry Huntington the man, and the Library and Gardens. We then had time to explore the Library containing a huge collection of rare books and other printed material that researchers from around the world come to access. We viewed many pieces of famous art work by Thomas Gainsborough and others displayed in the palatial Huntington Mansion and had time to walk among the many beautiful gardens on the 204 acre property. The Japanese garden alone is 15 acres! Our “Afternoon Tea” at the newly renovated Tea Room was a unique and enjoyable experience for all. A “must do” if you visit the Huntington! Saturday evening at the Langham Hotel our private dinner in the Pavilion Room provided lively conversation, fine dining, and incomparable service. We had a relaxed Sunday morning schedule as we were in no hurry to depart! After a leisurely breakfast and morning stroll on the beautiful grounds of the Langham, we were picked up by Breakaway Tours for our return trip. A stop at Travel Town in Griffith Park allowed us to view one of the former Santa Maria Valley steam locomotives, SMV No. 1000, the largest steam loco to operate on the SMVRR. Our return trip had us arriving in Buellton in time to enjoy a delicious dinner and lively atmosphere at Industrial Eats. We arrived in SLO Sunday evening at about 8 p.m. concluding our unforgettable Huntington Trip! |
